Sarah’s position had been made redundant and her company had engaged Outplacement Australia to provide her with one-to-one career transition support.

Ideally Sarah wanted to remain in an Environmental Health & Safety role after having successfully broken into the industry for the first time two years previously with her current employer.

Soon after finding out about the redundancy, Sarah discovered an ideal role as an EHS Specialist with a local, well respected company.

After contacting the company it was disappointing to hear that the advertised job had closed. In fact the contact person explained they’d had a good response, had already interviewed, and had a second-interview shortlist, so the chances of a new application being considered were poor.

"Despite this news Sarah's coach and expert resume writer, Michelle, wasn’t convinced it was a lost cause. Michelle encouraged Sarah to apply regardless; pointing out she was a fantastic fit for this job."

Sarah reluctantly agreed and Michelle immediately went to work with Sarah on strengthening her resume with content from her recent role to showcase her new EHS capabilities. She also partnered with Sarah to craft a strong application letter presenting her potential value to the business. Together they had a resume and letter ready to go mid-afternoon the following day.

The following week the company called and asked her to come in for an interview. She contacted Michelle and they did extensive interview preparation including coaching, company research and question preparation.

She was naturally nervous given the importance of the role, and having not interviewed for a while, and spoke with Michelle multiple times before the interview.

The interview itself was confronting with a panel of three but using the story telling technique rehearsed and the prepared questions she left feeling positive. The following day she contacted Michelle and they wrote a thank you email, which she was about to send, but before she had a chance they called and offered her the job.

She has since discovered that her cover letter was the key to getting a foot in the door – it addressed every point in their advertisement and was backed up with proof. Even though she only had 2 years experience and they were looking for 5 years experience in their advertisement, her performance results were compelling. They had to get her in.

Comments by Sarah:

“The help provided by Michelle was outstanding. It is a real blow to your confidence to be made redundant from a job that you love, and I was struggling to get motivated to start looking for something new. Michelle was brilliant- she got my resume ready to go out within a day and gave me template cover letters to use. When I found promising job leads, she helped me fine-tune the cover letters to suit.”

“When I received a call for an interview, Michelle gave me excellent coaching and really helped me to feel prepared for the session- I was quite apprehensive, as I had not had a job interview for many years. At all times, Michelle was positive and encouraging, and really gave me the boost that I needed to get back into the job market. I would not have gotten the placement that I have been offered without her help.”
